I. Lost Not Forgotten
Field notes
Bright green with a yellow and orange head, this parrot travelled in noisy flocks through eastern North America's river forests. Seeds, fruits and other plant foods sustained it. Its former range reached far beyond the warm Florida landscapes often associated with parrots.
- Former range
- Eastern and central North America
- Habitat
- River valleys, swamp forests and other wooded lowlands
Extinction
Forest clearance and persecution contributed to its decline. Its final disappearance is less clear: researchers still investigate the sudden loss of the remaining Florida birds. The date of the last wild population cannot be stated with confidence.
