Field notes
Beneath its delicate fan of feathers, the Victoria crowned pigeon is a substantial forest-floor forager. Small groups search for fallen fruit and seeds, retreating into trees to roost. Chicks begin life with miniature crowns, and both parents share the work of raising them.
- Range
- Northern New Guinea and nearby islands, including Yapen and Biak.
- Habitat
- Lowland rainforest, swamp forest and other densely wooded lowlands.
Conservation
Hunting for meat and feathers combines with logging and other forest clearance to threaten wild populations. Conserving lowland forest protects the places where these largely terrestrial pigeons feed, shelter and breed.
